Junk Removal Tips

How Much Does Junk Removal Cost in Murfreesboro? (2026 Prices)

By Nathan ·

BoroBoys dump trailer with bags of household junk ready to haul in Murfreesboro TN

Most junk removal companies make you call, wait for someone to come out and “take a look,” and then hear a number you can’t compare to anything. We think that’s silly. So here’s the real junk removal cost in Murfreesboro, with actual prices, what fits in each load, and how it compares to renting a dumpster or hauling it to the dump yourself.

The short answer: BoroBoys charges by how much of our trailer your stuff fills. A single item starts at $100, half a trailer is $400, and a completely full trailer is $750. That includes the lifting, loading, hauling, disposal and sweeping up afterward.

Junk Removal Prices by Load Size

Our trailer is 7 feet wide, 14 feet long and 4 feet tall. That’s about 392 cubic feet, or roughly 14.5 cubic yards. In normal-person terms, a full trailer holds about six or seven pickup-truck loads.

Load size Price About how much space What usually fits
Single item (minimum) $100 1 bulky item A small couch, a fridge, a washer or a recliner
Quarter trailer $200 ~3.5 cubic yards A couch, a chair and a stack of boxes, or a small bedroom set
Half trailer $400 ~7 cubic yards A one-car garage of clutter, or a small room cleanout
Three-quarter trailer $575 ~11 cubic yards A packed two-car garage, or a big basement cleanout
Full trailer $750 ~14.5 cubic yards Most of a house, a whole estate, or a big remodel’s worth of debris

Every price includes:
– All the labor. You point, we carry, even from the back corner of the attic you’ve been avoiding since 2019. (Stairs and basements can add a little; more on that below.)
– Hauling and disposal fees. No surprise “dump fee” on the invoice.
– Sorting for donation and recycling. Good stuff goes to a second home instead of the landfill whenever we can manage it.
– A sweep-up when we’re done.

How Junk Removal Pricing Works

Almost every junk removal company in the country prices the same basic way: by volume, not by item count or weight. You pay for the slice of the truck or trailer your stuff takes up. That’s why a broken treadmill and a love seat can cost about the same. They take up about the same room.

A few things are worth knowing when you compare quotes:

  • Get the whole price up front. Ask whether the quote includes labor, hauling and dump fees. Ours does, so the number we give you is the number you pay.
  • Watch for minimums. Many national companies charge for at least an eighth of a truck, even for one item. Our minimum is $100.
  • Heavy stuff is different. Concrete, dirt, roofing shingles and brick are heavy enough that disposal is priced by weight, so a small pile can cost more than it looks like it should. If you’ve got heavy materials, mention it when you ask for a quote.

How Murfreesboro Prices Compare to the National Average

National cost guides put the average junk removal job at around $225 to $250 per load, with most jobs falling somewhere between $115 and $450 (LawnStarter, 2026). Their full-truck averages run about $600 to $800.

Here’s how our prices line up:

National average range BoroBoys
Minimum / single item $60 – $150 $100
Quarter load $125 – $250 $200
Half load $200 – $450 $400
Three-quarter load $400 – $600 $575
Full load $600 – $800 $750

So we’re right in the normal range. The difference is that you can see our price before you call, and you’re dealing with a local crew, not a call center three states away.

What Single Items Cost

If you’ve only got one or two things, here’s what single items cost. Most bulky items start at our $100 minimum:

  • Mattress: $100 on its own, or $125 for a mattress and box spring set. Adding a mattress or box spring to a bigger pickup is just $65 each. Every mattress price includes the county’s recycling fee, so there’s nothing extra at the dump.
  • Couch: from $100 for a small couch or love seat. Big sofas, sleeper sofas and sectionals cost more depending on size, so text a photo for an exact price. See furniture removal.
  • Refrigerator: $100 to $125, depending on size.
  • Washer or dryer: from $100, a bit more if it’s in a tight spot or down a flight of stairs.
  • Treadmill: from $100. Big commercial-style treadmills, or ones in a basement, cost more because they’re heavy and awkward to move.
  • Recliner, dresser or desk: from $100.

Two or three items together usually land at the quarter-trailer price ($200) or less, depending on size. A couple of jobs are priced on their own because the work is bigger than the space they take up:

  • Hot tubs: these need to be disconnected, cut down and hauled. Free estimate. See hot tub removal.
  • Sheds, decks and other demolition: free estimate based on size.
  • Whole-house and estate cleanouts: usually one or two full trailers, but we’ll walk through and give you a firm number. See home and estate cleanouts.
  • Offices and businesses: office furniture, equipment and storage rooms, with flexible scheduling around your business hours. See commercial junk removal.

What Changes the Price

Two homes with “a garage full of junk” can end up with very different bills. Here’s what actually moves the number:

  1. Volume. By far the biggest factor. A loosely packed pile of boxes takes more room than you’d think, while broken-down furniture takes less.
  2. Heavy materials. Concrete, dirt, brick and shingles are priced by weight at the dump.
  3. Stairs, basements and tight spots. Carrying a washer up from a basement is a different job than rolling it out of a garage. Stairs and basements add to the price, and we’ll include that in your quote up front so it’s never a surprise.
  4. Special disposal fees. Some items cost more to get rid of no matter who hauls them. In Rutherford County, for example, mattresses and box springs now carry a $25 recycling fee each (Rutherford County Solid Waste). Our mattress prices already include it.
  5. Things we can’t take. Like nearly every hauler, we don’t take hazardous materials like chemicals, fuel or asbestos. Check our items we accept page if you’re not sure.

Things that don’t cost extra with us: hauling and disposal fees, sorting donations, and sweeping up afterward.

Doing It Yourself: What the Dump Costs in Rutherford County

Hauling it yourself is absolutely an option, and we’d rather you know the real tradeoff. Here’s how it works for Rutherford County residents:

  • County convenience centers take household trash for free with proof of residency, up to about one pickup-truck load a day. Bulky items like couches and furniture are limited to three per day, and the containers are about six feet tall, so bring a friend with a strong back (Rutherford County Solid Waste).
  • Mattresses and box springs are $25 each.
  • The county transfer station takes larger loads but charges by weight, and it doesn’t take mattresses, tires or construction debris (Rutherford County Transfer Station).
  • Brush and tires go to the county landfill on Landfill Road, which charges by the ton for brush and per tire.

Hours and rules change, so check the county site or call Solid Waste at (615) 898-7739 before you load up.

When DIY makes sense: you’ve got a truck, a free Saturday, a couple of items and a helper.

When it doesn’t: you’d need several trips, you don’t own a truck or trailer, there’s anything heavy involved (fridges, sleeper sofas, pianos), or you value your back more than the $100 to $400 most jobs cost. By the time you rent a truck, buy gas, make three dump runs and ice your shoulder, hiring it out often costs about the same.

Junk Removal vs. Renting a Dumpster

A roll-off dumpster usually runs about $300 to $600 for a week nationally. That sounds similar to a junk removal load, but there are differences:

  • With a dumpster, you do all the loading. Every couch, every box, every trip down the stairs is on you.
  • It sits in your driveway for a week, sometimes leaving marks, and the neighbors will start “donating” to it.
  • There are weight limits and banned items, and overage fees if you go past them.

A dumpster makes sense for a long remodel where debris piles up over days. For a cleanout you can finish in one day, junk removal is usually cheaper once you count your time, and there’s nothing sitting in your driveway. See construction debris removal if you’re in the middle of a remodel.

How to Save Money on Junk Removal

  • Pull out the good stuff first. Sell or donate anything worth keeping before we arrive. Less volume means a smaller load size.
  • Break things down if you can. A disassembled bed frame or table takes up much less room than one that’s fully put together.
  • Do it all in one trip. Two half loads cost more than one full load. If you’re doing the garage, think about the attic too. See garage and attic cleanouts.
  • Team up with a neighbor. If you each have half a trailer of junk, one full load is cheaper than two halves.
  • Ask about the military discount. Military customers get 10% off.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum charge for junk removal?

Our minimum is $100, which covers one bulky item like a small couch, a mattress or an appliance, including the labor and disposal. A mattress and box spring set on its own is $125, and mattresses added to a bigger pickup are $65 each.

Do I have to move everything outside first?

No. We carry it out from wherever it is: the bedroom, the garage, the back of the basement or the far corner of the yard. You don’t have to lift a thing.

What if I don’t know how much junk I have?

That’s normal. Most people guess way high or way low. Send us a few photos and we’ll tell you which load size it looks like, or we’ll size it up when we arrive and give you the price before we start loading.

How do I get an exact price?

Text us a photo or a quick video of what you want gone and where it is (garage, upstairs, backyard). We’ll send back a price, and you’ll know the cost before we show up.

Is junk removal cheaper than renting a dumpster?

For a one-day cleanout, usually yes, especially once you count the time spent loading it yourself. Dumpsters make more sense for remodels that create debris over several days.

Do you charge extra for stairs or basements?

Yes, a little. Hauling heavy items up stairs or out of a basement takes more time and more hands, so it adds to the price. We’ll include it in your quote before we start, so you’ll know the total up front.

Should I tip junk removal workers?

It’s never expected. If the crew went above and beyond, a cold drink on a Tennessee summer day is always appreciated, and so is a Google review.

What happens to my stuff after you haul it?

We donate items in good condition, recycle metal and electronics, and take only what’s left to the landfill.
